"At a Glance" by Erika Sanada

This work was inspired by the many picture books my mother used to read to me when I was a child. My mother loved mysterious stories about animals using magic or the art of 'henge' to transform into humans—even if those transformations were somewhat imperfect. I was deeply captivated by those flawed transformations, and I loved having those stories read to me.
Even now, they continue to exert a profound influence on my work and are one of the reasons I choose animals as my primary subject matter. For this particular piece, I wanted to express that moment from the picture books where animals use illusions to take on a human form, yet still retain their original animal characteristics. -Erika
